There was pure shock and confusion for a moment and then I got to work. I called for my mom, we grabbed towels and began drying up the water (that we later found out was coming from our dishwasher… needless to say we got rid of it). It didn’t take the rocket scientist in me (thankfully because I’m not one) to realize that I needed to act fast when I saw the water. I’m sure for most people, seeing a puddle of water on their kitchen floor would put them into action as well. There are several reasons why water should be cleaned up quickly despite just the natural reaction of people.

Why does water damage need to be cleaned up quickly?

It doesn’t take long for water to do its thing and cause damage where it stands. If water damage is left untreated for too long, further damage can be done.

  • Your Health and Safety: Your health and safety is very important and sadly, water damage can oppose that. If water damage is left untreated, the water involved can begin to grow bacteria and other pathogens that could be dangerous for you. As well, the longer water or moisture sits, the better ground there is for mold growth. Mold can cause problems for your respiratory system especially for young kids or if you have underlying conditions such as asthma.
  • Structural Damage: Water can weaken structures over time which could be a danger for you. Wood can grow weak, metal can rust, and drywall can warp. Not only could weakened structures become dangerous but after so long, these materials could get to the point where they cannot be repaired. They may have to be replaced.
  • Cost: At the end of it all, cost is a factor that needs to be addressed. Many people make their decisions off of what will be the least costly option. That’s perfectly okay. I’m one to look for the deal in every situation as well and that’s why cost is something to think about here as well. If you take care of the water damage as soon as  you realize it occurred, it will save you so much more money in the long run. The longer water sits, the more damage there will be, the more money it will cost.
